EDITORIAL: From “Karamanlis or tanks” to “Mitsotakis or Konstantopoulou”

By Pantelis Savvidis

The current political atrophy in Greece stems from the fact that it failed to create a true bourgeois class. Venizelos made some efforts in that direction, but they sank in the waters of Smyrna.

A clique of comprador elites — who also own or control the media — lingers near every ruling power, profiting from the country.

In return, they provide political support to those in office. And the result is shallow, fabricated political dilemmas. Once it was “Karamanlis or tanks.” Today it’s “Mitsotakis or Konstantopoulou.”

There is nothing more deceitful than such dilemmas — then and now.

Manipulated opinion polls, designed by mass psychology experts to steer outcomes, are deployed to rescue the crumbling ruling party. The message: the current prime minister — a classically incompetent politician — is irreplaceable because “no one else can take his place.”

His supposedly strongest opponent, as presented by the media, is Ms. Konstantopoulou — a politician with an extreme rhetoric and a delivery style that is deliberately radical, crafted to frighten the public: “If you don’t vote for Mitsotakis, Konstantopoulou will come.” That’s the chorus line. A tactic formed by Mitsotakis’s labyrinthine network of supporters, some of whom appear to be paid from public funds for their party services.

The “game” is obvious, yet it has convinced many. Point out the government’s inadequacy to someone, and they’ll respond: “Yes, but who will replace him?” And that is the political tragedy of Greece.

With the help of all institutions, corrupt media, and a co-opted intellectual class, Greek society has entered a state of hibernation. It reproduces itself around a false dilemma: that there is no alternative.

May God grant him long life, but if something happens to Mitsotakis — what then? Will the country collapse?

The plan has a second phase: to crush any institutional opposition — especially the party that could challenge Mitsotakis’s fabricated dominance.

This is why a campaign to discredit the opposition leader Nikos Androulakis has been underway since the day he was elected.

Androulakis may lack the charisma of his predecessors, but firsthand experience suggests that he is no worse than Mitsotakis. If and when the oligarchs decide to support him, you’ll see how quickly public impressions change.

Things with him may not be better — but they won’t be worse than the Mitsotakis administration. Still, a change would inject fresh momentum into society, redefine the political game, and maybe even lift the ruling party out of its current state of disarray, held together solely by the spoils of power. It would offer hope for political renewal, encourage new coalitions, and possibly break the monopoly between government and oligarchs that has long burdened Greece.

If there is a political solution with both moral and national character, it is Mitsotakis’s departure. Everything else can be resolved.

From a natural perspective, one might say, “nature abhors a vacuum.” Politically, “cemeteries are full of irreplaceable people.”

If there is no political change, Kolokotronis will once again be proven right: “This millet is beyond saving — or even destroying.” In other words, it’s flatlining.

Do you want things to stay the same? Fine. But we must all be aware — responsibility lies with us all.

In altri termini, è già morto.
