These spectacular floor mosaics were discovered in the ancient city of Zeugma, located in modern-day Turkey, and were originally founded by Alexander the Great in 300 BC. But, in 2000, the Turkish government built a vast dam just a mile away, which threatened to leave the area submerged under water. This triggered a desperate attempt to excavate and save as many of the mosaics as possible before they were lost forever.
