NATO Summit: Trump Blasts Macron’s ‘Brain-dead’ Comment, Says He Can See France Leaving Alliance

Macron ‘needs protection more than anybody and I see him breaking off. So I’m a little surprised at that’ said Trump as two leaders prepared to attend NATO summit

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he could see France breaking off from NATO, and that French President Emmanuel Macron had been “very insulting” by describing NATO as “brain dead” as the two leaders prepared to attend a NATO summit.

“I do see France breaking off,” Trump told reporters during a meeting with the head of NATO in London, describing such scenario as a surprise because he believes it needs more protection than anybody else.

“I’m looking at him (Emmanuel Macron) and I’m saying that he needs protection more than anybody and I see him breaking off. So I’m a little surprised at that.”

About Macron’s statements trump said “It’s a tough statement, though, when you make a statement like that, that is a very, very nasty statement to essentially 28, including them, 28 countries,” Trump told reporters as he met the head of NATO in London.

“I think that, you know, you have a very high unemployment rate in France. France is not doing well economically at all. They’re starting to tax other people’s products so therefore we go and tax them,” Trump added.
