A Turkish court has issued a broadcast ban preventing Turkish media outlets from covering an explosion at a military base in the south-eastern district of Şemdinli, the state-run Anadolu Agency announced on Friday evening.

Turkish news sources reported earlier on Friday that multiple soldiers had been injured in the blast, which took place at around 5 p.m. Turkish time (GMT +3).

The explosion is thought to have been set off by defective ammunition. Local news quoted the Turkish Defence Ministry as saying 25 soldiers had been taken to hospital and seven were still missing.

Images reported by media outlets before the ban showed a huge plume of smoke rising above the mountainous terrain where the base is located.

The Turkish government frequently imposes media bans after major incidents. The majority of terrorist attacks in recent years have been subject to bans preventing reporting on some aspect of the incident, such as graphic images.
